Artist Biography
Marcella Ho is a visual artist born and based in Sydney/ Eora with a Bachelor (Honours) of Design in Photography and Situated Media from the University of Technology, Sydney. The foundation of her practice is photography but she pushes the boundaries of image-making by expanding into other mediums like digital art and video-based works.
Digital decay is the core of her practice, expressing the mental recklessness of her anxiety and depression that underpins her process. The abstraction in Ho’s artworks is the direct result of her practice, where the original image source becomes no longer recognisable.
There is a sensibility of abstract expressionism in the works framed by the digital space where digital programs and tools are at the core of Ho’s practice. The abstract visual imagery of her works derives from the method of processing the digital image within itself until the original image source becomes no longer recognisable. Bounds and restrictions are in place during the making of the works where her perfectionist tendencies are relinquished to let the process direct the final result. Repeating an image into a closed circuit cycle of reproduction resulting in corrupted glitch imagery parallels and illustrates the paralysing nature of her mental health.
